Adsorption of carbon dioxide by 3-(triethoxysilyl)-propylamine -modified chitosan-based composite in fixed-bed

Adsorption of carbon dioxide by 3-(triethoxysilyl)-propylamine -modified chitosan-based composite in fixed-bed / Muhammad Mus’ab Umair Azeman
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ A chitosan based adsorbent was successfully modified with 3-(Triethoxysilyl)-Propylamine (TESPA) and used for the investigation of carbon dioxide (CO2) adsorption performance in fixed-bed column adsorption system. Morphological structure and functional groups present in the adsorbent were analysed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared analysis (FTIR). The adsorbent composite modification parameter such as Chitosan:Bleaching Earth clay ratios and TESPA loadings were also investigated. The results showed that a ratio of 1:4 and TESPA loading of 7.86 wt. % provided the best CO2 adsorption capacity. In addition, the effects of CO2 feed concentration in the feed and column adsorption temperature were investigated in the adsorption experiment. The study revealed that CO2 feed concentration of 18% and column adsorption temperature of 35oC were the optimum operating conditions which gave the highest adsorption capacity of 82.31 mg CO2/ g adsorbent. The chitosan based adsorbent multi-cycle CO2 adorption test revealed that it can be reused for several times before the adsorption performance reduced.
