Adsorption of methylene blue using polyvinyl alcoholpolyethylene glycol nanocomposite incorporated with multiwalled carbon nanotubes / Yuveraj Thanasagaran
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Adsorption performance of polyvinyl alcohol/polyethylene glycol (PVA/PEG) and polyvinyl alcohol/polyethylene glycol incorporated with multiwalled carbon nanotube (PVA/PEG/MWCNTs) were investigated by removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. The PVA/PEG and PVA/PEG/MWCNTs adsorbents were synthesized by solution casting method for the adsorption experiment. The effects of operational parameters which includes contact time, initial concentration and adsorbent dosage on removal of MB were studied and the optimum conditions for maximum removal were determined. The maximum removal of MB by PVA/PEG were found to be 31.16% at 240 min (contact time), 10 mg/L (MB concentration) and 1 g (PVA/PEG dosage) while for adsorption of MB by PVA/PEG/MWCNTs were found to be 99.85% at 1290 min (contact time), 10 mg/L (MB concentration) and 1 g (PVA/PEG/MWCNTs dosage). The equilibrium data obtained were fitted by Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models and Langmuir model showed good agreement with the equilibrium data for both adsorbents with 𝑅2 of 0.9898 and 0.9868 for PVA/PEG and PVA/PEG/MWCNTs, respectively. On the other hand, the maximum adsorption capacity (𝑞𝑚) for adsorption by PVA/PEG and PVA/PEG/MWCNTs were determined as 0.687 mg/g and 3.174 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process using both the adsorbents found to be dominated by pseudo-second-order with 𝑅2 for the PVA/PEG and PVA/PEG/MWCNTs were 0.9595 and 0.9997, respectively.
