Adsorption of chloramphenicol antibiotic on ordered mesoporous carbon

Adsorption of chloramphenicol antibiotic on ordered mesoporous carbon / Syed Zulfadli Syed Putra
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The adsorption of chloramphenicol on ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) was investigated in a batch process. During the preparation of OMC, the optimum preparation conditions were obtained from journal. In addition, the preparation of OMC involved the preparation of the template which was ordered mesoporous silica (OMS). The optimum condition for OMS calcination process is 550 °C of temperature, heating rate 1 K min-1 and 240 minutes dwelling time while the optimum condition for OMC carbonization process is 800 °C, heating rates 1 K min-1, and dwelling time of 240 minutes. A series of batch adsorption studies was conducted on chloramphenicol at different initial concentration ranging from 10 to 50 mg L-1 at 303 – 323 K. Besides that, effect of pH on adsorption was studied within the pH 3-11. The maximum adsorption uptake was 22 mg/g at 303 K. The obtained equilibrium data for chloramphenicol was best fitted by Freundlich model. Meanwhile, the kinetics data were best represented by the pseudo-first- order model and the adsorption process on OMC was spontaneous and endothermic in nature based on thermodynamics studies. Therefore, polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG-400) can be adapted as one of the alternatives source of carbon that can replace any hazardous carbon source used for nanocasting of OMC.
