Adsorption of methylene blue onto oil palm ash derived adsorbent

Adsorption of methylene blue onto oil palm ash derived adsorbent / Mohammad Ashraf Marzukhi
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The adsorption performance of methylene blue (MB) on zeolite synthesized from palm ash was examined using a batch method. Palm ash undergoes chemically facilitated KOH activation and hydrothermal treatment with oil palm ash as precursor. Characterization of the prepared zeolite was done using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Selection of the best adsorbent was done by varying the kaolin weight ratio (1, 2, and 3 gram) during oil palm ash derived adsorbent synthesis. From the adsorption performance oil palm ash derived adsorbent with 3 g kaolin was the best adsorbents at 89.78% MB removal efficiency. The effects of initial dye concentration (25-500 mg/L), temperature (30°C-50°C), and pH (3-12) on the adsorption of MB on adsorbent were studied. Pseudo-second-order kinetics was found to describe the adsorption process better than pseudo-first-order kinetics. Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms applied on the adsorption data reveal that data best fitted Freundlich model. The maximum adsorption capacity values of the adsorbent for MB were 337.30, 341.20 and 359.45 mg/g at 30°C, 40°C and 50°C respectively. These results show that the oil palm ash derived adsorbent have the potential for further development of low-cost adsorbents from industrial waste.
