Physical and chemical characteristics of microorganisms developed in a modifield anaerobic inclining-baffled reactor treating recycled paper mill effluent / Muhammad Hanif Aslam Anuar
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The development of granular sludge is the key factor for successful operation of the modifield anaerobic inclining-baffled (MAI-B) reactors. This paper deals with the changes in physical and chemical characteristics of microorganism developed in a modifield anaerobic inclining-baffled (MAI-B) reactors. The bench scale reactor was operated at 37 oC for a period of 60 days. The size of granular is higher than 0.33 mm that is good size particle. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) show some of bacteria have irregular cocci, long and short rod and spherical shape. Inductive coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) analysis show the results indicated that calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc may have played a crucial role in the formation of the aggregates of sludge. For elements analysis by electron disperse X-ray (EDAX), show carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, aluminium and silicon are the major elements that have inside the sample. X-ray diffraction (XRD), show the chemical compositions of elements for each samples. Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the surface functional group of sample and the highest functional group of the sample is (C-C, C-O, C-N). Zeta analysis show all the samples are in negative charge.
