Thresholding technique is one of the most popular techniques in image segmentation. Different types of thresholding techniques have been developed in the past few decades. Most of them are unable to perform well when the acquired images suffer from uneven illumination and low contrast. Hence, the main objective of this project is to develop a new thresholding algorithm that can perform good segmentation on images that have non-uniform illumination and also low contrast. The proposed method is developed by using the local variance criteria to exclude some unnecessary background pixels from the early stage before computing the mean threshold for each region. The proposed method is compared in term of qualitative and quantitative performance with two chosen methods which are the Otsu method and the Variational Minimax (VM) optimization method. As a part of qualitative analysis, an image analysis survey is conducted on 25 participants to rate the performance of the aforementioned three methods. For the quantitative analysis, Non-Uniformity (NU) and processing speed are performed to quantify the performance of the proposed method. The results conclude that the proposed method is able to achieve good overall performance in both qualitative and quantitative analyses. In addition, a Graphic User Interface (GUI) is developed to display the comparison between the results of the selected techniques, to perform additional functions such as preview the loaded image, save result image etc.
