Biodiesel production from rubber seed oil

Biodiesel production from rubber seed oil / Nafilah Khalid
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Rubber seed which was considered as waste products from the rubber plantations can be used as a potential source for biodiesel production. Proximate analysis of the seeds showed that the moisture content was 6.5 %, protein, fat and ash yield at 0.20g/g, 0.62g/g and 0.03g/g, respectively. In this study, the rubber seed oil was extracted from the seeds using an ultrasonic method. The effect of various extraction parameters such as solvent to seed ratio, extraction temperature and extraction time were looked at. Results showed that the maximum extraction yield of rubber seed oil was 22% when the extraction variables were ratio of solvent to seed at 10:1, extraction temperature 45°C and extraction period 50 min. The extracted oil was converted into biodiesel via an esterification process using methanol as the alcohol in the presence of sulfuric acid as an acid catalyst. The reaction parameters that have been considered in this experiment were methanol to rubber seed oil molar ratio, acid catalyst loading and reaction temperature. The results showed that the highest yield of biodiesel was 12% when the ratio of methanol to rubber seed oil was 4:1 in presence 0.50 % (v/v) of sulfuric acid at a reaction temperature of 50°C.
