Biosorption of copper (II) ions by chicken feathers optimization and characterization studies

Biosorption of copper (II) ions by chicken feathers optimization and characterization studies / Mohamad Farhan Nordin
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The optimization of copper (II) ions removal by chicken feathers using One Factor at A Time (OFAT) and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) methods were investigated. In OFAT method, effect of pH (6-11), initial copper (II) ion concentration (10-200 mg/L), solid to liquid ratio (1-3), and incubation time (1-6 hours) for the removal of this Cu (II) ions were also looked at. The optimum condition were at incubation time 4 hours, pH 9, initial Cu (II) ions concentration 100 mg/L and solid to liquid ratio 2:1 (2). Under these conditions, the percentage of Cu (II) ion removal achieved was 50.03%. Under RSM method, it showed that the linear and quadratic terms of these four independent variables had significant effect towards the percentage of Cu (II) removal. RSM also gave the same optimal conditions and the percentage of Cu (II) ion removal was at 51.92%. Meaning that, RSM predicted higher Cu (II) ion removal at 3.64% compared to the OFAT method. The characterization of biosorbent using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) showed that the structure changed before and after biosorption process due to the ion exchange mechanism.
