Design and modelling of single phase permanent magnet brushless motor for light duty water pump_Ramesh Al Krishnan_E3_2011_875003925_000003089481_NI
_________________________________________________________________________________________ A single phase permanent magnet brushless motor has a permanent magnet on the rotor and it has a higher efficiency than an induction motor, higher speed bandwidth and lower maintenances compared to a DC brushed motor. A single phase permanent magnet brushless motor is less expensive and easier to fabricate compared to the three phase permanent magnet brushless motor. Thus, the single phase permanent magnet brushless motor is widely used in low cost and power applications such as disc drives, video cassette recorders, CD, CDROM, fans, laser printers, photocopiers and water pumps. This project discusses about designing and modeling a single phase permanent magnet brushless motor for a light duty water pump. The objective of the project is to construct and analyze the single phase permanent magnet motor, its starting principle and starting requirement. order to analyze, the Opera 2d simulation software is used. Basically permanent magnet brushless motors build up of 2 parts namely rotor and stator. The rotor is moving part meanwhile stator is static part. This motor is having an asymmetrical air gap motor. Asymmetrical air gap is to induce the starting capability for the motor. Other than that, the modeled motor is a radial flux motor and parallel flux motor. It can be explained by magnetic field travels in radial and parallel direction across the air gap. From this project, it is known that the four slot and four pole motor parallel magnetized having lesser cogging torque and higher EMF compared to the four slot and four pole motor radial magnetized. For the two slot and two pole motor, radial magnetized model having the higher EMF and lower cogging torque compared to the parallel magnetized model. But as overall, the four slot and four pole motor parallel magnetized having significantly higher EMF and lower cogging torque among the four model.
