Regeneration of coconut shell activated carbon (csac) via microwave irradiation method for h2s adsorption

Regeneration of coconut shell activated carbon (csac) via microwave irradiation method for h2s adsorption / Mohd Farid Fahmi Sukri
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Recently, utilization of coconut shell biomass is highly appreciated, since it can be converted into value-added product such as activated carbon. Due to its chemical and physical properties, coconut shell is selected as an ideal-precursor to producing activated carbon. Coconut Shell Activated Carbon (CSAC) need to be regenerated in order to reduce the amount of waste produced while sustaining the utilization of biomass activated carbon in a very long period. In this work, microwave (MW) regeneration is preferred due to the conservation of energy and its capability for homogeneous and instantaneous heating. The CSAC sorbent was tested with H2S adsorption in order to test the regeneration efficiency. Optimum parameters have been achieved by manipulating MW heating temperature, MW heating time, and nitrogen (N2) flow rate. The optimum parameters obtained at 500ºC of MW heating temperature for 10 minutes, under 300 ml/min of N2 flow rate. The efficiency for temperature obtained is 257.8%, nitrogen flow rate is 302.13% and heating time is 484.4%. The CSAC has been analysed using CHNS elemental analysis, nitrogen adsorption/desorption analysis and by Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM). From the analysis, the surface area obtained at optimum regenerated CSAC is 3121.01m2/g and the carbon content from elemental analysis is 37.24%. Based on N2 adsorption isotherm studied, it shown that the development of microporous structure contributes to higher H2S adsorption capacity. From analysed data, it can be deduced MW heating mechanism is an efficient method for CSAC regeneration as well as increasing the adsorption capacity of H2S.
